Ben Frederick’s Race Report - Richmond Festival of ‘Cross, Bryan Park, Richmond VA

When I looked at the start list, I knew that this was going to be a hard race. Names like Greg Wittwer, Joe Dombroski, Keck Baker and Adam Switters made me very nervous. All those guys are strong men on the road. Then I pre-rode the course. There was almost no elevation gain, and 40% of the race was on the road. There was a triple set of barriers after an off camber turn, 30 yards from the finish. More nervous. I knew tactics and drafting would play a huge role in the outcome of the day.

From the gun, Greg Wittwer went off the front, determined to make the race hard. I settled in to the top 5 and let other people chase. When we hit the first long road section, Joe Dombrowski viciously attacked out of our chase group and I knew that was the wheel to get on. When the dust settled, we had a 10 second gap from the feild, and about 15 seconds to Wittwer. We worked together to bring back Wittwer and all three of us continued to increase our gap on the rest of the field.

With three to go, Joe started to attack like crazy. Greg and I were able to cover the attacks but not with out some work. Going into the last lap, Things settled down and it was a game of cat and mouse for the win. Any of us could win. Greg attacked into the last single track. I caught his wheel and as we went to the barriers, I knew I had pull something out. We all had been running the barriers the whole race, but I knew whoever could get into their pedals the quickest could win. I decided to channel my inner Jeremy Powers and bunny hop the barriers. I was able to accelerate out of the barriers and hit the last 180 degree turn first and sprinted for the win.
